The history of Florida Public Folklore can be divided into 3 eras the by overarching program of the time:
1935-1942: The Federal/Florida Writers' Project Years
1953-1976: Before the FFP: The Early Festival Years
1976-present: The Florida Folklife Program Years
There is technically much overlap between these periods. For instance, many researchers from the FWP years continued working in Florida after the project officially ended. Their activities often influenced or precipitated programs in the next eras. Furthermore, the Folk Festival itself did not end with the formation of the FFP; rather, the two programs became complementary. Finally, the development of the FFP produced a proliferation of projects, and these can hardly be summarized within one simple category. However, for the sake of chronological and organizational understanding, these three eras mark the definitive periods in the development of Florida Public Folklore.
